Frequently, aged and/or damaged buried water mains and drainage/sewerage pipes need to be repaired/rehabilitated to prevent further loss of precious water from water mains and/or to reduce pollution arising from leakage of sewage or surface runoffs.
Conventionally, the replacement or rehabilitation of these pipes would involve the traditional open cut excavation methods where, at most areas in Hong Kong, would mean nuisances (at times, on a major scale) to traffic & public convenience (noise, visual, odour effects) and even safety hazards to the public.
